Providing food for students in need who may not have enough food to eat on weekends or long school breaks.

PACKS is funded through local donations from individuals, churches, organizations, the Ritchie County Community Foundation, and the Parkersburg Area Community Foundation. We rely on volunteers to plan, purchase, organize, set up, pack, tear-down, and deliver food.

We are housed at The Gym in Harrisville, who generously donates use of the facility.

How Packs of Plenty came to be

By the grace of God, PACKS of PLENTY began just before Christmas break in 2011. Three people came together and asked the community to help provide food for the students of Ritchie County for Christmas break. In 10 days, over $15,000 was raised, food was purchased, staged and about 150 volunteers came out to The GYM in Harrisville and packed 963 bags of food, each with meals for ten days, all in 90 minutes. The following day, the food was delivered to each of the schools in Ritchie County, and that afternoon, older students were helping the younger students carry their bag home. “We got the GOOD stuff!” was the comment heard in the halls of the high school. And food was shared with those in need across the county.

PACKS of PLENTY was born. An answer to prayer asking how to show God’s love to the people of Ritchie County. And He provided and continues to provide. We stand on the Word of God, believing, as it says in Philippians 4: 19: “And my God will provide all of your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.”

Since that first Christmas Break packing, PACKS has continued to provide food for all holiday breaks to the students in need at all Ritchie County schools. In 2013, PACKS submitted a grant to the Parkersburg Area Community Foundation for funds to provide bags of 2 lunches, 2 breakfasts and snacks per weekend to 100 Ritchie County Elementary School students. We were awarded $5000 and packed 1500 bags from January – March 2014.

We have continued to provide “break packs” and “weeklies” as we call them, to the students of Ritchie County. We do not know any of the recipients. The teachers of the schools let us know how many packs are needed, and God provides through the community. Bags are packed on Wednesday night and delivered to the schools on Thursday mornings, all through the power of volunteers. There is no paid staff for PACKS, all are volunteers.

Donations are the backbone of PACKS and come from individuals, businesses, local churches, and community organizations. Banks, CEOS, 4-H clubs, Women’s Clubs, Car Clubs, all raise funds to provide for the needs of the children in our county. From collecting food to a Polar Plunge, there are many activities that have raised funds for PACKS.

In the Fall of 2017, beginning after Labor Day and going through Christmas Break we began packing and sending food home weekly, adding to our need for food and funds. Our goal is to provide food for those students in need, every week that students are in school, and we are close. We continue to write grants and pursue opportunities to tell people about our mission—to feed the future of Ritchie County.

We spend between $500 and $700 per week to pack the bags sent home with our students. These bags contain 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches and snacks. With 36 weeks in the school year, that amounts to $18,000-$25,000. AND it takes about $5000 per holiday to send food home with our students, so our budget is typically $40-$45,000 per year. We have been blessed by several sponsors collecting or donating food (thank YOU Armstrong and Ritchie County Fair, and Riddles Chapel and Sleep Inn). We couldn’t do it without YOU!
